Introductory Watercolour Class

Beginning Watercolour and Art History
Tuesday mornings Jan. 8, 15, 22    - 10 a.m. - 12 noon (ask about other times if this doesn't work for you)
Beaux-Arts Brampton Workshop, 70 Main North, Brampton

A fast blast intro.
Create a unique album of personal masterpieces reflecting styles as they morphed through centuries and nations.  Images and period music will serve as fodder for experimentation.  We will freely steal ideas from many media and apply them to watercolour.  This class will not be heavy on dogma. I believe that we learn by doing. The art styles have been carefully chosen to eliminate stress for the "drawing challenged".
Don't be afraid of the "history" label. The history will consist of about 15 minutes of video at the beginning of class - just enough to get you acquainted with terms and styles we'll be using - bring your coffee and relax.

Week 1 - line and outline - positive and negative painting
Week 2 - light, shadow and intensity - creating depth while retaining brightness
Week 3 - personalizing your palette - variety and learning to avoid too much "mud"

Emphasis will be on finding and using the properties of watercolour to our advantage.
The basic suggested materials list:
1. Palette - VERY basic - plastic "wheel" type with clear cover - $2 at dollar stores or Curry's art supply
2. Paints - 3 small  tubes of watercolour - a red, a yellow, a blue (suggest permanent rose or quinacrodine red, Winsor or  Pthalo Blue, Aureolin Yellow or Hansa Yellow - any three similar colours are acceptable - student grade paints are fine)
If you plan to pursue watercolour painting on a more serious basis, invest in a professional grade.
3. Paper - a small pad or at least 6 sheets of watercolour paper - 5x7 inch is adequate
4. HB  Pencil and white eraser
5. Water media brushes - suggest a flat (1/2 inch), a round (size 2, 6) - student grade are fine
6. Assorted tools - old credit card, plastic margarine tub, small sponge, paper towels, masking tape

If you do not wish to invest in the supplies above,
I will supply a limited number of "loaner kits" at a cost of $15 each. These may be used and stored in the workshop and will be turned in after class on the 22nd.  If you wish one of these please let me know by December 15th. (to be sure I have enough)  For questions or to reserve your "loaner kit", please contact me through the contacts page on this blog.
